
History
Established in the 1980s by local Tuskegee Institute Alumni, (Dr. Fostine Riddick- Roache class of ’39, Nursing) as the Tidewater Tuskegee Alumni Club and later changed it’s name to Hampton Roads Tuskegee Alumni Club in 2018 under the leadership of Chasity Pritchett (’07). Hampton Roads Alumni Club includes alumni and friends who live in the following cities: Chesapeake, Franklin, Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Poquoson, Smithfield, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Elizabeth City, N.C.
For over three decades, local alumni from our cherished institution have exemplified the transformative spirit of Mother Tuskegee, embodying the principles of leadership, innovation, and unwavering dedication to community service. It is with great pride that we celebrate the remarkable contributions of individuals such as Nancy Rhodes ('61, Nursing), whose pioneering work in healthcare has paved the way for future generations; Tracey Young ('88, Engineering), whose engineering excellence and visionary approach have made significant impacts in her field & community; Dr. Willie Darby ('73 & '77, Chemistry), whose dedication to scientific advancement and education continues to inspire; Doris Robinson ('79) and Veronica Monte their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit have significantly contributed to both the club and our community, showcasing their dedication as educators and leaders for many years.
We also honor Nathaniel Johnson ('58, Building Construction), whose legacy is marked by his distinguished service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation. His dedication and contributions to both military and civilian life are a testament to the enduring values of leadership and service. We remember him with deep respect and appreciation for his significant impact. Additionally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to his wife, Betty Konce-Johnson, whose unwavering support of our alumni club and university has been a profound source of strength and inspiration in Nathaniel's absence.
Veronica Meade, Esq. ('97, Architecture) is recognized for her outstanding achievements in law & architecture and her continued commitment to excellence in her profession. Her work reflects the high standards and innovative spirit that Tuskegee instilled in her.
Additionally, we celebrate Dr. Mary Redd-Clary ('73, Education), whose transformative efforts in education have shaped countless lives, and Emma Vinson-Brown ('81 & '83, Education), whose passionate service in educational outreach stands as a beacon of commitment and excellence.
Mr. Jimmy Pinnock ('84, Mechanical Engineering) is honored for his dedicated service in the local Navy Shipyard and his selfless volunteering for our club and the community, embodying the spirit of Tuskegee with his commitment to service.

We also extend honorable mention to past club presidents: Dr. Bertha Davis ('72), Dr. Alphonso Crenshaw Smith ('61), Mr. Maynard Brown ('60), Lt. (Ret.) Col. Remus C. Rhodes, III ('57), and Brenda Mauney ('73). Their hard work and dedication have been instrumental in maintaining the integrity of our club and in consistently providing scholarships to Tuskegee students. Their leadership and commitment have ensured that the spirit of Tuskegee continues to thrive and support future generations.
These trailblazers and dedicated leaders have not only upheld the esteemed principles of our alma mater but have also set a shining example of service and leadership in the Hampton Roads community. Their extraordinary achievements remind us of the powerful legacy of Tuskegee and the enduring impact of dedicated service. We are profoundly grateful for their contributions and celebrate their outstanding accomplishments with immense pride.
